Tips to Beat Utah’s Drought with Soil Conditioning

The start date for Secondary water from the Weber Basin has been pushed back. Utah’s lakes are far from capacity, and now we’re already getting recommendations to water only lawns only once per week. Utah’s lawn survival rate is going to drop without doing something about it.

Here are a few drought protection tips to apply right away!

Tip #1 – Allow Watering to Go Deep

During summers’ hot days, the top layer of soil a few inches deep will dry up. Because roots only travel a few inches deep, they end up in dry dirt, further away from watering benefits. Your sprinklers need to run around an hour to get the water deep enough. For those on slopes, run your water for 30 minutes, twice in the cycle.

Tip #2 – Pass Up on that Core Aeration

We know aerating your law has benefits when it comes to loosening up surface tension across the lawn. That said, aerating your lawn doesn’t do much to help roots grow deep within the soil. Instead, it encourages them to stay shallow where the cores get pulled up.

Tip #3 – Apply Soil Conditioning

Lawn care experts know that if a lawn is fertilized and has a good balance of macro and micronutrients, the root system is able to go deeper and become stronger.. If a lawn becomes nutrient deprived, the root system will shrink and stay shallow.

At Big League Lawns, we offer a soil conditioning service that when applied, breaks down the surface tension across your lawn in order to create micro-fractures that go deep into the solid, allowing roots to grow faster, stronger, and more effectively. Remember, the deeper your roots can grow, the more availability they have to water.

Our soil conditioner is designed to loosen topsoil and encourage deeper rooting to allow greater oxygenation of the root zone. By utilizing biostimulants and highly oxidizing material at key growth stages, we are able to stimulate growth very effectively.

We can perform this service anytime during a lawns growing season, and we do cover the entire lawn, benefiting every section.

There is no need to mark sprinkler heads, invisible fences or cable lines for this service. We come in, apply the soil conditioning, and go. Let us know if you have any questions or want to get started by filling the form out on our website or calling us at 801-773-9999.
